OK, I'd say the following was a cautionary tale, but I can't figure out how Dr. Tom Stafford could have handled this situation any differently-what it is, however, is hilarious.
Tom appeared on The Today Programme a couple weeks ago (listen to it here) talking about the psychology of coffee, and making what you would've thought was an uncontroversial claim that coffee tastes better when he drinks it out of his favourite mug. He (and his comment feed) describe what happened next very well on his blog, idolect.

ReplyDeleteGiving the Daily Mail the benefit of the doubt, I've realised upon reading the article again that the Daily Mail could be referring to a different study of mug preference, which revealed only that 65% of British people have a favourite mug, without correlating this information with beverage flavour.
Does anybody know where the (fairly uncontroversial) 65% claim comes from?
